Foreground Architecture (
formerly FMSA Architecture)

YEAR COMPLETED: 2006

As part of the School for Student Leadership, Snowy River Campus at Marlo, is a purpose designed and built residential facility uniquely designed for year 9 students selected from Victorian Government schools.

Designed by FMSA Architecture*, the buildings that form the Snowy River Campus include many sustainable design features including a solar chimney that facilitates heating and cooling throughout the year.

“The building was designed to foster a sense of community in the form of a village hub with reception area, dining hall, learning centre, kitchen, storage and staff areas. From this hub spring residential accommodation arms articulated to express organic growth. The connection to the landscape is reinforced with the incorporation of environmentally sensitive design principles such as a thermal flue, which assists in managing the natural heating and cooling of the living environment.”

Apart from the flexible teaching and communal spaces, the campus facility provides student and staff accommodation, a commercial kitchen, and storage for outdoor equipment. The architects have considered the environmental impact of every element.

The design makes extensive use of  solar hot water and rainwater collection.

There are two separated accommodation and bathroom facilities. There are 12 rooms in each of the two accommodation wings catering for up to 45 students and in most cases two students are allocated to each room. Student rooms have been designed with areas to sleep, work and relax.
